Clifton Labs has performed hydraulic transient analysis for a number of hydroelectric projects. We use the method of characteristics to model pressure transients in tunnels, canals, and penstocks which arise from changes in plant discharge. The results determine turbine and inlet valve actuation times that will limit turbine/generator overspeeds and pressure transients to safe levels.
